May Homeward 2019
Mind Your Mom!
Every May I sit down to write Homeward Bound, and I write about Mother’s Day, as it is a very special day for very special people.
My Mom used to tell me, seemingly repeatedly, to do this and do that, or not to do this and not to do that. Looking back all these many years later, I can say she was a very wise woman – as it was ALL very valuable advice.
She was always focused on the best for her six kids. Many of you know, my family is from Nicaragua. After the big earthquake in Managua of 1972, my family lost everything, including our home, several other properties, and a family-owned grocery store. We had to move to another city for several months and life was chaotic and so different, but my Mom insisted that I got a great education – because my parents were previously big donors to the Jesuit neighborhood elementary school, she arranged for me to get a scholarship to the best private Jesuit school in Managua until my family could afford to pay for it. This provided me with a great foundation which I followed up by graduating with a Bachelor's and Master's Degree from Cornell University, one of the top universities in the US. I continued on to have great corporate jobs, and I now own a real estate brokerage. I owe lots of my success to my mother.
My mother always had time for me, she relocated to Miami and we talked often – she persisted in making sure I was working hard and putting my education to good use.
I miss our talks, but I am so fortunate, as her mind was sharp and she was always upbeat until she passed away, a year ago on Mother's Day. The circle of life is amazing, as sad as it is to have my first Mother's Day without my Mom, I am so happy that this is the first Mother's Day for my daughter Desiree, as her newborn daughter is now 2 months old!
In the moment, it is sometimes hard to understand or appreciate your mother, but time reveals that every caring mother is a wise woman. I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Moms. So here is a shout out to all Moms – Happy Mother’s Day!!
I am sure some reading this can relate and have similar stories. For ALL those whose Mom is no longer with us, may you remember the best about them. In addition to that, there are also many who never knew their Mom due to unfortunate circumstance. I bet someone played that role in their life and they too deserve a Happy Mother’s Day!
Regardless, we can celebrate this Mother’s Day knowing Moms both here and no longer here are special in more ways than we can count. Especially the Moms who are sitting right now by their child’s hospital bed not too far from where I type this…
Especially the Moms who are sitting right now by their Child’s hospital bed not too far from where I type this…
Right now, there are kids at Fairfax Children's Hospital who are trying to beat the Cancer Monster and other nasty debilitating diseases. Fairfax Children’s Hospital is one of the best non-profit hospitals treating kids, even leading the way in early diagnosis of autism and recovery of spinal cord injury. The Moms with kids being treated at Fairfax Children’s Hospital are most likely NOT thinking about their special day this month. They are simply just being “Mom” doing what a real loving Mom does. God bless them for it.
My Mom told me to give all I could, no matter what I was doing. Many years later, I am still following her direction. As part of our Mission, we proudly give back to those on our community who need help the most. In this case, the amazing kids with amazing Mom’s at Fairfax Children's Hospital. You may recall my team and I are on a mission to raise $5,000 for Fairfax Children's Hospital in 2019. We do that by donating a portion of our income from home sales to this very worthy cause.
I’ve added the photo again of myself along with my wife and mortgage lender Sarah Pichardo and many of the great agents at our company proudly holding up a check for $3,000, payable to Fairfax Children's Hospital. We were able to do this because of so many of our great clients doing business with us and referring those they know wanting to buy or sell. Every year I strive to do all I can to help you, your referrals, and Children’s Hospital continue their leading-edge care. THANK YOU!
